Silver Spring Networks (SSNI), the Silicon Valley smart grid networking startup that went public last month on the strength of its U.S. smart meter deployments, has now staked a claim in the U.K.’s $7.5 billion plan to install smart meters in every home. That’s according to Businessweek, which reported Thursday that Silver Spring and partner Vodafone are competing against a host of smart grid competitors to build the communications systems that will connect the eventual 53 million or so new smart meters, half electric and half natural gas, that the U.K. wants to deploy by the end of the decade. Other bidders include the SmartReach group, a collaboration of BT, BAE, Arqiva and U.S. smart metering company Sensus, as well as Telefonica and Airwave Solutions. Silver Spring has been working in the U.K. since 2011 with Cable&Wireless, which Vodafone bought in 2012, with engagements on the Isle of Wight’s EcoIsland Partnership, as well as a smart grid networking project in Cambridgeshire. But then, Vodafone is also working with Trilliant, a neighbor and competitor to Silver Spring, which has deployed about 500,000 smart meters with big U.K. energy retailer British Gas. Stay tuned for more details on what this means for Silver Spring’s international aspirations, which range from Europe and Brazil to New Zealand and Singapore.
