How much do you really know about Green IT? Do you know, for example, what percent of server reduction an enterprise can expect to gain from virtualization? How about which devices have the overall highest power consumption: storage devices, high-end servers, mid-range servers, or networking equipment? If you increase the temperature of your data center, how much on average will you reduce your energy consumption? How much paper, on average, does an office worker use every year?

Here’s your chance to find out all that and more, and to test your knowledge of Green IT and green computing. In my blog, “Think You Know Green IT? Take This Pop Quiz and Find Out,” I’ve put together a ten-question test, so you can see whether you’re a rank novice or a true Green IT maven. Answer most of the questions right, and it’s time to ask your boss for a raise.

No matter how you do on the test, you can always learn more about Green IT, and this week we’ve got help for you: An excerpt from the book “The Green and Virtual Data Center.” Author Greg Schulz offers excellent advice on how to enable a green and virtual data center. Everyone talks a good game about greening the data center, but in this excerpt, “Enabling a Green and Virtual Data Center,” Schulz tells you the steps you should take to green your IT in the smartest and most efficient manner.
