6 New Animals, One Fungus and a Tree Added to 25 Most Wanted Lost Species List, Following Rediscoveries

The Earth is full of diverse and fascinating species, and more than 2,200 of them have been lost to science for at least 10 years.

That’s why the Texas-based conservation group Re:wild has launched its “top 25 most wanted lost species” list, and on Wednesday it added eight new species to replace those that have already been rediscovered.

Solar Panels to Be Installed Above California Canals

Solar panels are coming to two California canals. The “Project Nexus” follows research from the University of California-Merced finding substantial benefits for water quality and delivery, in addition to the benefits of renewable power generation.

This first-of-its-kind pilot project will install solar arrays over two canals (one 25-feet wide and one 110-foot-wide) in the Turlock Irrigation District, allowing operators to monitor and evaluate the arrays’ impacts on water quality and evaporation and learn more about the potential maintenance and logistical issues involved with installing and operating solar panels over the canals.

Tyson Foods Uses Land Twice the Size of New Jersey to Feed Its Factory Farmed Animals

Tyson Foods is one of the largest food companies in the world and produces 20 percent of all of the chicken, beef and pork in the U.S. All of that meat needs to eat, and growing the food to feed it takes a lot of land.

Now, a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) calculated that Tyson needs between nine and 10 million acres of farmland to feed all the animals it processes, an area almost twice the size of New Jersey.
