What went right this week: England’s rewilding plan, a nuclear agreement, plus more
The first week of 2022 got off to a reassuring start – five of the world’s most powerful nations agreed that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought”. Amid rising tensions between the pledge’s signatories (namely Russia, China and the US), this was an encouraging development.
Also welcome was the announcement that farmers in England are to be paid to rewild their land. It’s part of an overhaul of land management practices in England aimed at reversing biodiversity loss. The jury is out as to whether the plan is radical enough, but it’s certainly a step in the right direction.
This week saw the first significant medical breakthrough of the year – a blood test that can detect cancer. Plus, Denmark set a 2030 deadline for zero-emissions domestic flights.
