Dear Friends and Subscribers,

We have a particularly exciting research agenda and events calendar this year. While we are keeping a few things secret until later in the year, we are delighted to share with you an update on what has been keeping us busy, as well as what we have in store for you over the coming months.

Agenda Released: Upcoming conference
The agenda for the inaugural Peace Metrics, Peace Economics and the Role of Business conference has just been released. The multidisciplinary conference will take place this April in Washington D.C. and will focus on measuring peace, describing the economic benefit of peace, and identifying the relationship between business and peace. Academics and graduate students participating in the conference will also contribute to a new publication called Peace Metrics

The conference is jointly hosted by the American University’s Kogod School of Business and the Institute for Economics and Peace. You can find details of the conference, access the agenda and register here

Peacebuilding Department
On the 15th of February 2013, U.S. Congress Woman Barbara Lee introduced a bill to establish a Department of Peacebuilding. The bill, H.R. 808: Department of Peacebuilding Act of 2013, references IEP research on the cost of dealing with violence and the consequences of violence in the U.S. The bill cites IEP’s report on Violence Containment Spending in the U.S. to make a case for the socio-economic benefits of peace. Peace and the Post-2015 Development Agenda
With the deadline to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) rapidly approaching, a series of thematic consultations are taking place around the world to determine priorities for a post-2015 development agenda.
The Institute for Economics and Peace has been working with members of an Expert Reference Group to guide the thematic consultation on Conflict, Violence and Disaster in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Collaborating with other organisations and individuals around the world, IEP is working to ensure that peace and resilience are at the core of the post-2015 development framework.

Given the vast amount of resources related to peace and the post-2015 agenda, we have put together an information portal with key reports, links and facts related to conflict, violence and disaster. See Peace and the Post 2015 Development Agenda for more.

Call for Papers – Leadership for Peace and Prosperity Conference
The Institute for Economics and Peace is collaborating with San Diego’s Ahlers Center for Business, and the Center for Peace and Commerce, to present a conference on conflict, violence, sustainable peace and business. The conference will be held at the University of San Diego in October this year and will facilitate the sharing of best practices and research between academics and researchers from around the world. Abstracts should be submitted by the 15th of May 2013. See details here.

Announcing a new Peace Index
We are delighted to announce that we will be releasing the first ever United Kingdom Peace Index next month. As with all other indices developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace, we are also producing an interactive map that displays the data and a report that outlines the key findings, including the economic benefits of peace in the UK..

Best wishes,
Vision of Humanity
